Frequently asked questions
Due to the ever increasing number of POIplace user, the number of incoming
e-mails has grown to such a level that it is no longer possible to answer all of
them.
That was the reason for this page: a list of frequently asked questions and
their answers.
Register and logon
I want to make use of POIplace; how to start?
First of all you have to register for POIplace. Click the "Register"
button on the left of your screen and follow the instructions.
After you've registered, you receive a confirmation e-mail. Follow the
instructions in the e-mail to complete your registration.
Then you can make use of POIplace.
I registered but did not receive an e-mail
First of all: please be patient. It can take up to 12 hours before
you receive the confirmation e-mail.
If you don't receive an e-mail within 12 hours after you registered, you
probably made a mistake in entering your e-mail address.
Register again and make
sure to enter the correct e-mail address.
I can't complete step 3 of the registration
process; POIplace tells me that it doesn't know the e-mail address I entered.
Probably you entered another e-mail address then the one you
initially used to register for POIplace. Use the e-mail address on which you
received our confirmation e-mail.
I forgot my password
Go to the logon page, enter the e-mail address you used to register for
POIplace, and click the "I forgot my password" link.
Then you will receive an e-mail containing your password.
I forgot my security code
Go to the logon page, enter the e-mail address you used to register for
POIplace, and click the "I forgot my security code" link.
Then you will receive an e-mail containing your security code.
I got myself a new e-mail address.
No problem. After you've received a confirmation e-mail during the
registration process, the e-mail address is used for identification purposes
only.
Please keep using your old e-mail address to identify yourself to POIplace.
When you forgot or lost your password or security code, you can register again
with your new e-mail address.
POIplace and CheckPOInt
Please see the
CheckPOInt FAQ for questions concerning CheckPOInt.
Download overlays
Where can the images for the overlays be
downloaded?
POIplace is mainly intended to be used in combination with
CheckPOInt. You can use
the synchronization features of
CheckPOInt to automatically download the overlays and their images to your
Pocket PC.
I you prefer to download overlays by hand, then you can simply save the images
with standard Internet Explorer functionality: move your mouse cursor over the
image you want to save, press the right mouse button and select "Save picture
as".
Add and remove points-of-interest
What notation should I use when adding or
removing POI's?
There are several notations for longitude/latitude coordinates.
POIplace makes use of the decimal notation.
So you can enter a coordinate as a decimal number.
How can I convert other coordinate notations to
the decimal notation?
Please go to
this website
to do so.
Contents of POIplace
Where does POIplace get its points-of-interest
(POI's) from?
From you, the users of POIplace. You can add a POI, either by
hand or by using
CheckPOInt. The same goes for removing POI's.
Some POI's appear twice on the map; how come?
Sometimes multiple POIplace users upload the same POI to
POIplace.
When the coordinates are exactly the same, POIplace will store only one of the
POI's. But when the coordinates are slightly different, both POI's are stored.
Sometimes the one user records a speed camera simply as "speed camera" and
another users records it as a "speed camera 80". Then both POI's will be stored
as well.
What can we do to prevent double or triple
registrations of the same POI?
First of all: when you record a POI, be as precise as possible when
selecting the type of POI. So, when you're recording a speed camera, then record
it as a speed camera for the local speed limit.
Second, every month a script is run which scans the contents of the POIplace
database and filters out double registrations of the same POI.
I added a POI to POIplace, but now it's gone.
What happened?
Probably another POIplace user removed the POI.
What unit (kilometres or miles per hour) is used
for speed limit related overlays?
Actually: none. It depends in which country the speed limit related
POI is located. For example, the POI's in the overlay "Speed camera 60" indicate
a 60 Mph speed camera when they are located in Great Britain, but they indicate
a 60 Km/h speed camera when they are located in France.
Using POIplace
Why doesn't POIplace have a feature to upload an
existing overlay file?
POIplace does not offer such functionality to prevent that
copyrighted overlay files are uploaded. I logged on to POIplace, but each time I
click one of the buttons (e.g. "Download" or "Add a POI") I have to login
again.
